Description
Original US Navy pilot's gear or helmet bag used between 1950 and 1975. The bag looks to be custom made and has four very nice patches sewn on. The bag measures 17" wide at the top opening and 20.5" long down the sides. The first patch is from 1950 to 1959, VF-64 or USN Fighter Squadron 64, nicknamed the Freelancers. This is a very large patch at 6.75" tall in the center, and appears to be a nice fully embroidered Japanese construction. The squadron was flying the F3H-2 Demon, as depicted on the patch. This exact aircraft on the patch with nose / modex number 204 can be seen in the very last photo, dated 1958. The patch lists the USS Midway CVA-41 and several pacific locations. Those are Hawaii, the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa, Hong Kong, and Japan. The squadron was redesignated VF-21 in 1959.
The second patch is VF-21 Freelancers. This squadron continued to fly the F3H Demon until 1963, then switched to the F-4 Phantom. This one looks to be US made in the 1960s, embroidered on twill. This one measures 4.75" from top center to bottom.
The third patch is VF-92 Silver Kings. This fully embroidered patch shows a snake wrapped around a chess piece, over a spade. This patch is also a fairly large size, measuring 5.75" from top center to bottom.
The last patch is for the AGM-53A Condor missile. This one could have been made from 1962-1975, and seems to be an uncommon patch. This one measures 4.25" wide.
