"GENERAL WAR"AUTOGRAPHED CAP RECEIVED DIRECTLY FROM GENERAL BORISOV in Late 1990s
An Intriguing and Controversial Piece of Cold War Memorabilia
The story is as follows:
Reportedly, Major General Vycheslav Borisov was the Deputy Chief Commander of 100,000 Russia Airborne forces during its war in Afghanistan. Reportedly he was the architect of an operation called 'Armageddon' - hence earning him the code name "General War." While unconfirmed by the CIA and other intelligence services, there was a .5 million dollar bounty for taking him out.
According to Borisov's account, in 1985 his helicopter was downed by enemy fire and crashed and exploded on impact in the Afghan mountains. In the chaos, the confirmed atheist experienced a religious conversion and emerged as the sole survivor of the 12
soldiers
aboard the copter. The next day
"
The Voice of America" broadcasted that "General War has finally been destroyed." In actuality, h
e was severely wounded and spent 6 months in a coma. Reported his conversion helped open up the ability to distribute Bibles on Russian Military Bases.
While I can not confirm this account, Borisov's role in the Russo-Georgian war and Ossetia is well documented. In January or 2010 when the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia arrested 13 individuals connected to the Intelligence Division of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on charges of espionage, Borisov's business card was found in the wallet of one of those charged.
Intrigued by the story, I attended one of his personal appearances where he reported that Russian Officers would trade one of their caps in exchange for a Bible. That's how I came to own this item.
Borisov retired from military service in 2012.
The flyer from the event I attended is included with the autographed item.
Fact or Fiction - Mystery or Myth? All I know is this is his story as he tells it.
