Description
This coin was issued underKing Uzun Hasan
(AH 857-882,
1453-1478
AD),
Ak Koyunlu
, Turkomans of
White Sheep
in Middle East region.
Ak Koyunlu was a Sunni Turkoman tribal confederation that
ruled Middle East region
. Ak Koyunlu Empire reached
its zenith
under
Uzun Hasan
. The name of Ak Koyunlu is first mentioned in late 14th century sources. It has been suggested that this name refers
to
old totemic symbols
. Another hypothesis is the name refers to the
predominant color
of their flocks.
Ak Koyunlu Turkomans
first acquired
land in
1402
, when
Timur
granted them all of Diyar Bakr in present-day Turkey. For a long time,
Ak Koyulu were
unable to expand
their territory, as the rival
Kara Koyunlu
(Black Sheep) kept them at bay. However this changed
with the rule of
Uzun Hasan
, who
defeated the Black Sheep
Turkoman leader Jahan Shah in
1467
.
After the defeat of a Timurids leader,
Abu Sa'id Mirza
, Uzun Hasan was able to take Bagdad along with territories. But
Ottoman Empire
sought to expand eastwards, a serious threat that forced Ak Koyunlu into
an alliance with Karamanids
of central Anatolia.
Uzun Hasan
translated Quran
into Turkic. He initiated some
financial and administrative reforms
to weaken the separatism of
the military and tribal nobility an to strengthen his vast state.
