Original, vintage Usgi punch that was used to lock in place the swivel screws of the Garand rifles. It's military original.  It's very rare, as was distributed only to battaillon armourer, one of these tools every 60 rifles.
Was used as example from the SA (Springfield Armoury) for the M1 Garand Gas Cylinder Stacking Swivel, Stock Ferrule, but was used in many other Weapons . Probably was supplied to each armory, weapons repair workshop of US Department, Battalion or Company.
Staking is the process of connecting two components by creating an interference fit between the two pieces. This Staking Punch is used to compress the screw boss axially and form an interference fit between the pieces and lock them physically in place to keep it from turning. So with a good pressure from the punch would cause the threads of the screw to crush downward, If hit the punch hard enough, the end of the screw would round.
We recommend that you test on other screws before working on the original screws of a weapon.
